A seven-month-old baby girl has died after she was found unresponsive in a car in Co Tipperary.

She was found in the car near Dundrum village at around 1.45pm.

The baby was transferred by ambulance to the local GAA field before being taken to University Hospital Limerick by air ambulance where she was later pronounced dead.

Gardaí were alerted to the incident and attended the scene.

They have described the baby's death as a tragedy.

The little girl was the only child of a local couple from Kilfeakle and gardaí understand the baby was found in her father's car after he went to work this morning in nearby Dundrum.

One line of investigation will be to examine whether heatstroke was a contributory factor to the death.

Temperatures in the area were reported to be in the 20s C during the day.
