A plebiscite to change the name of The Square in Newcastle West in Co Limerick to Con Colbert Square has been defeated.
Following the results of the plebiscite among 39 businesses and householders on The Square who were eligible to vote, the result favours no change in the name.
As a result, The Square in the west Limerick town will remain called The Square.
The decision to hold a plebiscite to change the name to one of the best-known Co Limerick 1916 volunteers, Con Colbert, was taken at the request of the town's municipal district.
Colbert, who was from Castlemahon and whose family then lived in Athea in Co Limerick, was bodyguard to Tomas Clarke during the Rising.
He was executed at Kilmainham Gaol on 8 May 1916.
After counting of votes today the total valid poll was 26, of whom only six voted to rename The Square and 20 voted against a change of name.
