A plebiscite is to take place to rename the square in the west Limerick town of Newcastle West after one of the best known 1916 volunteers, Con Colbert.
Ballot papers have now been sent to 39 residents and businesses in The Square, Newcastle West, asking them if they are in support of changing the name of the square in the centre of the town to Con Colbert Square.
Colbert, who was born in Castlemahon and whose family then lived in Athea, was bodyguard to Thomas Clarke during the 1916 Rising. He was executed at Kilmainham Gaol on 8 May 1916.
The plebiscite was agreed to last November following a request from the Newcastle West municipal district.
Over 22 of the 39 eligible voters must vote in favour of the change for the plebiscite to be carried. Voters have until 19 May to cast their votes.
The ballots will be opened and counted at the Limerick city and council offices in the town on 24 May.
