The woman who died in a house fire in Limerick in the early hours of yesterday morning has been named as Grace McDermott.

Ms McDermott, who was in her 20s, was originally from New York.

She was a former graduate of the University of Limerick and it is understood she had been visiting the city over the Bank Holiday weekend. She had been studying for a PhD at Dublin City University.

Her body was found in a bedroom of the three-storey house at The Oaks, Riverbank, Annacotty shortly after 3.20am yesterday.

The discovery was made after emergency services were alerted to a fire there.

Four other people, three men and a woman, who were also in the house managed to escape and raise the alarm.

An investigation is being carried out into the cause of the fire, but it is understood it started accidentally.

A post-mortem examination is being carried out on Ms McDermott's body.
