The Senior Conservation Architect for Sceilg Mhichíl has said rockfall on the island is a natural phenomenon and not linked to filming in the area.

Parts of the film franchise Star Wars was filmed on the island.

Yesterday, the Office of Public Works said that "significant rockfall" occurred on the island, which was discovered last Friday.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Grellan Rourke said that he is not sure when the rockfall happened.

The rockfall came down on the island's Lighthouse Road, near accommodation huts used during the summer months by the Office of Public Works' conservation staff.

The debris blocked the road and knocked a small section of a parapet over.

Mr Rourke said that the rockfalls do give cause for concern.

He said that safety crews sweep the areas prior to the start of every season, but there is no one on the island from October until April.

Mr Rourke said safety preparations are being made for the summer season and a team will assess the situation next week to see if the island can be opened for visitors on 14 May.

He said there is a lot of pre-season work to be done, but if everything goes well, he cannot see why it cannot be achieved.
