Watch: UN staffer describes 'apocalyptic' Gaza streetscape

A United Nations official has documented the extensive destruction of Gaza City, describing the streetscape as "apocalyptic".

Senior Communications Officer Louise Wateridge filmed footage from a moving convoy through the city on Saturday.

She told RTÉ's News At One that "everywhere you look is destruction and damage".

The war in Gaza began on 7 October 2023 when Hamas gunmen stormed into Israeli communities killing around 1,200 people and abducting about 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

Israel's military has since levelled swathes of the Palestinian enclave, driving large parts of the population from their homes, leading to deadly hunger and disease, and killing at least 40,000 people, according to Palestinian health authorities.
