A number of European countries have advised its citizens against travelling to Iran, Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian territories amid Iran's threats against its regional adversary.

Iran has threatened reprisals against Israel over a strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria on 1 April that killed seven Revolutionary Guards including two generals, sparking fears of an escalation of violence in the Middle East.

Iran has vowed retaliation over the strike in Syria and Israel warned of retaliation to any strike against it.

Israel, meanwhile, has continued its strikes on Gaza amid the threat of an Iranian attack.

France, Poland, Russia and India have each issued travel warnings to their citizens.

The French foreign ministry advised French citizens against travelling to Iran, Lebanon, Israel, and the Palestinian territories amid Iran's threats against its regional adversary.

France's Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne at a crisis meeting also asked that family members of French diplomats in Iran be evacuated, and no French civil servants be sent on missions to the listed countries.

The United States has also restricted the movements of its diplomats in Israel over security fears.

"Out of an abundance of caution, US government employees and their family members are restricted from personal travel" outside the Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Beersheeva areas "until further notice," an embassy notice said.

"The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events," it said.

Department of Foreign Affairs' advice

The Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland is advising against all but essential travel to Israel.

It has also advised against all travel to he occupied Palestinian territory, with the exception of East Jerusalem, where all but essential travel is advised.

"The security situation remains tense, difficult, and unpredictable, with the potential for intense escalation.

"Please continue to exercise caution, monitor local media regularly, follow the advice of local authorities, and observe any additional security measures imposed during this time.

"There is a risk of rocket fire, drone infiltration and ballistic missiles targeted at Israel which can occur without warning.

"This could disrupt civilian infrastructure, including transportation and communications," the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

The Department has maintained its advice against all travel to Lebanon and Iran.

Poland's foreign ministry advised against travel to Israel, Palestine and Lebanon in updated travel guidance published today.

"It cannot be ruled out that there will be a sudden escalation of military operations, which would cause significant difficulties in leaving these three countries," the ministry said in a statement.

"Any escalation may lead to significant restrictions in air traffic and the inability to cross land border crossings," it added.

India advised its citizens against travelling to Iran and Israel until further notice in view of the "prevailing situation in the region".

India's foreign ministry said its citizens in the two countries should observe "utmost precautions about their safety and restrict their movements to the minimum".

Russia yesterday advised against travel to the Middle East, especially Israel, Lebanon and the Palestinian territories.

"We strongly recommend that Russian citizens refrain from traveling to the region, especially to Israel, Lebanon and the Palestinian territories, except in cases of extreme necessity," it said.

"The tense situation in the Middle East region persists," said the Russian foreign ministry.
