UN postpones Security Council vote on Gaza

The United Nations Security Council has postponed its vote on a draft text calling for a "suspension of hostilities" to allow aid access to Gaza.

The vote was originally scheduled for yesterday afternoon but was pushed back when diplomats failed to agree on the wording.

It was then rescheduled for tonight but has now been pushed back until tomorrow.

The United States objected to the phrase calling for an "urgent and sustainable cessation of hostilities to allow safe and unhindered humanitarian access".

The US is Israel's strongest ally at the UN and has blocked previous council resolutions on a ceasefire, which they say would only benefit Hamas.

However, a new text is circulating that calls for the "urgent suspension of hostilities to allow safe and unhindered humanitarian access" and for "urgent steps towards a sustainable cessation of hostilities".
