A man who died following a fire at a house in Edenderry, Co Offaly this morning has been named locally as Christopher 'Crunchie' Holt, the brother of a woman who was killed in the same property last year.

Four-year-old Tadhg Farrell and his grand-aunt Mary Holt died after a petrol bomb attack on the house in Castleview Park, Edenderry on 6 December.

It is understood Mr Holt had been living at the house in recent months.

An investigation is under way following the blaze in the early hours of this morning

At around 4am this morning, it is understood a blaze broke out at the property and gardaí, ambulance and fire crews attended the scene.

Gardaí say they are investigating all the circumstances following the discovery of the man's body at the house, including that it may have been a tragic incident.

The man's body has been removed from the scene and taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore, where a post-mortem examination will take place tomorrow.

Gardaí have said that the result of the post-mortem examination will determine the course of any garda investigation.

The scene has been preserved for a forensic examination, the results of which, gardaí say, will also assist in determining the course of an investigation.

No one has been charged over the murders of Tadhg Farrell and his grand-aunt.

The little boy was visiting his grandmother and grand-aunt when the arson attack occurred shortly before 7.45pm on 6 December.

Gardaí believe the attack was carried out by people involved in drug dealing in the midlands and was intended to target a man who previously lived at the property.

While there have been a number of arrests as part of a wider investigation, there has only been one direct arrest for the double murder.

A man in his 20s was arrested in January on suspicion of murder and later released without charge.

A file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

An appeal has been issued in relation to the fire which happened this morning.
