A St Brigid's tapestry spanning over 100 metres, and designed to stretch across the width of the River Shannon in Athlone, will be unveiled this weekend.

The project has been facilitated by the Athlone Family Resource Centre and is led by community artist Kara Richards.

Knitters and crafters from across the world have taken part and each patch, which carries personal and cultural meaning, has been assembled into a single flowing textile work.

Organisers describe the cloak as a tribute to Brigid, symbolising creativity, shared heritage and community connection.

On Sunday organisers will carry Brigid's Cloak to Athlone’s new foot and cycle bridge and the group will attempt to unroll the cloak across the bridge’s full 103-metre span over the River Shannon.
