Major works to regenerate the historic Ardee Castle are set to begin this spring.

The project will include the structural conservation of the 15th century tower house in the heart of the Co Louth town.

Work to improve public access to all four floors of the tower will also be carried out.

The project is part of a wider 2040 regeneration plan for the town, which aims to increase tourism and support local businesses.

Louth County Council has now signed a contract with Francis Haughey Construction Ireland to carry out the work, which is expected to take 18 months to complete.

The Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Seán Kelly, said Ardee Castle is one of Louth's most important heritage landmarks.

He said the project will "not only preserve the building, but will also help to bring new life into the heart of Ardee".

The regeneration is funded by the local authority, the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht.
