Cannabis plants and herbs worth an estimated €2 million have been seized following search operations in Co Westmeath.

The searches were carried out under warrant at two residential properties in the Ballynagore area on Wednesday.

During the searches growhouse operations, which gardaí described as "sophisticated", were discovered and cannabis plants worth around €500,000 were found.

Cannabis herb worth an estimated €1.75m were also found in both properties.

The operation was part of an ongoing investigation targeting the sale and supply of drugs in the Westmeath area.

An investigation is under way and gardaí have said that both scenes were preserved for a technical examination.
