Esker House, a women's refuge in Athlone, is expanding its domestic abuse support services into Mullingar.

First established in 1982, Esker House provides services to women and children from Westmeath who are being subjected to domestic abuse.

As part of the expansion, Esker House, together with Cuan, will now be offering support services, counselling and guidance for women impacted by domestic abuse in the Mullingar area.

Last month an expansion to the domestic violence refuge for Athlone moved a step closer, after Government funding was officially approved.

The project, supported through the Capital Assistance Scheme, will create 12 new safe units for women and children in crisis at Esker House.

Esker House has seen a 49% increase in calls received this year compared to the same time last year.
