An investigation is under way after a man attacked a woman with an axe at a house in Leixlip, Co Kildare.

The man, in his 50s, who is the woman's former partner, set fire to the house at Oaklawn West before fleeing the scene.

It is understood the house was damaged upstairs and nearby homes were also slightly damaged.

Emergency services attended the house and extinguished the blaze.

The woman, also in her 50s, was taken to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown for treatment, where her injuries are described as serious.

The man’s body was found in Leixlip Reservoir by the Garda Water Unit following the incident.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses but say they are not searching for any other suspects.

Anyone who was in the areas of Oaklawn West, the Leixlip Reservoir and the N4 road between 5.30am and 8am yesterday is asked to contact them.

Social Democrats councillor Nuala Killeen said the whole community was very upset to hear the news and she said their thoughts were with the victim.

She urged any woman thinking they might need support to reach out to Women's Aid or Teach Tearmainn for help.
