A collection of jerseys worn by some of Co Louth's biggest sports stars has gone on public display.

The exhibition includes Stephen Staunton's famous green jersey from one of the Republic of Ireland's World Cup qualifiers against Portugal in 2001.

The Louth native, who also had a long and distinguished career with both Aston Villa and Liverpool, was previously Ireland's record appearance holder with 102 caps.

The shirt is one of a collection of iconic sporting jerseys now on display at the County Museum in Dundalk.

Also featured are jerseys from local athlete and one of Ireland’s fastest sprinters, Israel Olatunde, rugby legend Rob Kearney, trailblazing boxer and Drogheda native Deirdre Gogarty, and former Dundalk FC goalkeeper Charles 'The Wizard' Tizard.

The exhibition also includes some of the attire worn by the late pioneering athlete Maeve Kyle from Co Kilkenny, who made history as Ireland's first female Olympian in track and field.

County Museum in Dundalk curator Brian Walsh said the exhibition "brings together" jerseys worn by athletes who have represented their clubs, counties and country "with distinction".

He said: "Each shirt tells its own story of determination, pride and sporting excellence. We are delighted to showcase these remarkable items and to honour the men and women who wore them".

Meanwhile, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council Councillor Seán Kelly said: "Stephen Staunton was part of a special Irish team that gave every football fan around the country a host of wonderful memories.

"He is a true legend of Dundalk, and it is fitting that his shirt is the focal point of a new exhibition that celebrates the achievements of so many Irish sporting heroes," Councillor Kelly added.

The exhibition is running at the County Museum on Jocelyn Street in Dundalk and admission is free.
