The 17-year-old boy who died while swimming in the River Barrow in Carlow has been named as Peter Byrne.

He was from Carlow town and was very well known in the community.

The family of the 17-year-old have said they are devastated following his death, describing him as a "fun loving boy" who had everything to live for.

They said he was a lover of music and concerts and would be hugely missed by his large circle of friends and family.

Peter was involved in sport and played soccer with the local New Oak Soccer Club.

His body was recovered from the River Barrow by garda divers at around 11pm on Tuesday after he got into difficulty swimming.

It is understood he was swimming with a friend when he got into difficulty at around 6.30pm in the river in the Milford area, around 8km from Carlow town.

His friend tried to help, but also got into difficulty due to the strong currents, before he managed to swim to safety and raise the alarm.

The scene remains cordoned off by gardaí.

The Mayor of Carlow town said the local community is deeply "shocked and saddened".

Councillor Fintan Phelan said his "deepest sympathies" were with Peter's family and friends.

He expressed his shock at how friends could go for a swim and for it to end in such tragedy.

Water Safety Ireland has appealed to people swimming in rivers and seas during the good weather to be very careful of hidden currents.
