An Irishman who died after getting into difficulty while swimming in the sea in Malta has been named locally as Noel Ryan.

A native of Athlone, Co Westmeath, Mr Ryan was a well-known businessman and operated a retail business in the town for almost 50 years.

The 78-year-old died while swimming off the seaside town of St Julian's.

It is understood Mr Ryan was on holiday with his family when the incident happened.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was aware of the case and that its staff were providing consular assistance.

Mayor of Athlone, Councillor Frankie Keena, described Mr Ryan as "an absolute gentleman and a marvellous character who always loved to chat about times pass and current events in Athlone".

He added that Mr Ryan's death "has shocked young and elderly throughout the town".

"He had a fantastic personality, loved a bit of bantering, and knew everybody."

President of Athlone Chamber of Commerce Regina Bushell said the people of Athlone were saddened to learn of Mr Ryan’s death.

"Noel Ryan was one of Athlone’s characters who was liked and respected by the business community and people of the town who knew him well," she said.

In a statement yesterday, Maltese police said they were investigating the incident and that a magisterial inquiry had been opened.
