Firefighters are continuing to respond to a major industrial fire in Wicklow town.

However, Wicklow County Council said the blaze, which was reported around 5.45pm and created large plumes of black smoke over the harbour area, is now under control.

The fire broke out at the Dortek factory in Wicklow Harbour.

It is being attended by crews from Wicklow Town, Rathdrum and Arklow. A hydraulic platform has been deployed to fight the fire from above.

They advised the public that it is now safe to open doors and windows.

It is understood that a number of workers were inside the premises when the fire began, but the building was safely evacuated.

The county council warned that the building is a dangerous structure and have asked the public to avoid the area.
