Drivers breaking the speed limit face a €160 fine and three penalty points

Average speed cameras will be operating in two locations on the N2 in Co Meath from Friday.

Vehicles that are detected driving in excess of the 100km/h speed limit will be subject to prosecution from 12pm that day.

The speed safety camera system has been installed between Collen and Ballymagarvey.

It is part of the planned introduction of average speed cameras and static speed safety cameras across the country.

Anyone found to be driving in excess of the 100km/h posted speed limit will be issued with a Fixed Charge Notice, which assigns three penalty points to the driver's license and includes a €160 fine.

This fine increases to €240 if it is not paid within 28 days.

Gardaí previously said the use of average speed cameras is "intended to change driver behaviour, reduce the average speed of road users and the number of collisions that occur" and make roads safer for all road users.
