Families receiving emergency supports after a fire devastated their apartment block in Co Laois last week will be placed in emergency accommodation for another two weeks.

The three-storey apartment building in Kilnacourt, Portarlington went on fire in the early hours of last Thursday morning.

Two people were taken by ambulance to Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise.

Residents who lived at the apartment block were initially brought to Portarlington GAA club, which was opened up to help, with hot drinks, blankets and support on hand by Laois County Council housing staff and Laois Civil Defence.

They were later accommodated at a hotel in the town.

However, the hotel accommodation was until the end of the weekend.

It is understood temporary accommodation has now been secured for another two weeks.

Residents say they are concerned about their future and are appealing for assistance.

In a statement, Laois County Council said that it continues to engage with those impacted by the fire.

The statement said that "following a fire in Kilnacourt Woods, Portarlington on 20th February 2025, Laois County Council arranged for alternative emergency accommodation for affected persons who sought assistance and continue to engage with affected persons in relation to their needs".

Local councillor Aidan Mullins said that it is a difficult situation and the long-term solution is the most difficult part to resolve.
