Tributes have been paid after a "horrific" Carlow crash, on a road that has a history of incidents.

Gardaí have confirmed that all four people involved in this morning's crash in Carlow – in which two men in their 20s were killed - were Indian nationals.

They have been named locally as Bhargav Chitturi and Suresh Cherukuri.

Mr Chitturi, 23, had been working in a phone repair shop in Carlow town for a year and a half.

His employer, DJ Khalid said: "Yesterday, we were together. It was all fine.

"When they rang me this morning, I just couldn't believe it. He was a very, lovely person."

Mr Khalid said the employee was one of a kind.

His friend and colleague, Adrian Brennan also paid tribute to the young man.

"He was a lovely man and a good friend."

Area has history of incidents, says councillors

Independent Councillor Will Paton has highlighted that the area in which the crash happened has a history of road deaths.

"Unfortunately two more young men have lost their lives ... and what makes it even worse is this is literally a year to the day when three young people - two men and a young lady - lost their lives at the exact same spot," Independent Councillor Will Paton said.

"I can't even begin to understand the pain and suffering that people are going through.

"There has been a history of deaths, crashes, incidents, accidents at that particular area.

"It's gone on far too long and we really need to address this problem urgently," he said.

Mr Paton said there are plans to straighten the section of the N80 at Leagh Bends where the crash occurred early today.

"Carlow County Council has published a compulsary purchase order for a number of pieces of property in the area to straighten the road and a planning application has been submitted to An Bord Pleanála for consideration.

"Hopefully, An Bord Pleanála will see this as a crucial piece of infrastructure and allow us to proceed with the scheme and to remove the bends at Lough to make it a safer area.

"My only hope is that when members of the board see yet another accident at this place that they would place it in a priority list and move this scheme forward.

"We need it urgently, we need it yesterday, not today, not tomorrow," Mr Paton said.

"I don't want to be waking up ever again to see another news report to say there's been another incident at Leagh Bends, another death, another two deaths, more people injured.

"It's horrific, it's not acceptable and we really need An Bord Pleanála to come on board with us and give us an early decision so we can get on with the work of straightening the road and making sure this never happens again."

Fine Gael councillor Brian O' Donoghoe also said that the incident was "unspeakably tragic".

"It's so sad for the families who have lost loved ones," he said.

"My thoughts are with the young people who are in hospital, who were involved in this accident."

Mr O’Donoghoe said that Carlow Council Council has been trying to get changes to the road "over the line for a couple of years".

"The council has initiated the CPO process for purchasing the acquired amount of land to make corrections to the road," he said.

"A planning operation has been lodged. That process takes time."

"The whole country is aware of how dangerous this road is. There is no effort being spared to get the road up to spec."

He urged Carlow drivers to take particular care on that stretch of road.

"Be extra careful. Whatever speed you’re doing, go 10km slower."
