Gardaí have confirmed that all four people involved in this morning's crash in Carlow - in which two men in their 20s were killed - were Indian nationals.

Superintendent Anthony Farrell said the vehicle - a black Audi - had crossed to the wrong side of the road and hit with a tree.

He confirmed it happened at the "identical" location as a crash in which three young people were killed exactly one year ago today.

Supt Farrell said three of the four people in the car had attended South East Technical University. Two were graduates and one was still studying at the college.

He said gardaí were liaising with the University and were attempting to provide support to the victim’s families in India.

He added that one of the individuals was employed locally by MSD.

Supt Farrell appealed for anyone with information about the crash to contact Carlow Garda Station.

The single vehicle crash occurred on the N80 in Leagh, Rathoe at around 1.15am.

The driver and another man were pronounced dead at the scene. They have been named locally as Bhargav Chitturi and Suresh Cherukuri.

Two other passengers, a man and a woman also aged in their 20s, were taken to St Luke's General Hospital in Kilkenny with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Local Independent Councillor Will Paton said: "Unfortunately two more young men have lost their lives ... and what makes it even worse is this is literally a year to the day when three young people - two men and a young lady - lost their lives at the exact same spot."

On this day last year, three young people were killed in a crash on the same stretch of road.

They were: Daryl Culbert from Kiltegan in Co Wicklow; Michael Kelly from Nurney in Co Carlow - both aged in their early 20s - and Katie Graham from Arles in Co Laois, who was 19.

"I can't even begin to understand the pain and suffering that people are going through," Mr Paton said.

Gardaí said the section of road on the N80 which was closed due to the crash has now reopened.

Gardaí believe the car was travelling from Mount Leinster to Carlow town via Fenagh overnight when the crash occurred.

They are appealing to witnesses, particularly any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) or who were on the N80 at Leagh between midnight and 1.15am, to contact Carlow Garda Station on 059 913 6620, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
