A teenager has appeared in court charged with assault causing harm to a man in Mullingar last weekend.
The teenage boy, who cannot be named owing to his age, appeared before Mullingar district court today.
Detective Garda Brendan Hogan gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.
In court he indicated that there is a "very strong possibility of further serious charges" against the accused.
The alleged assault took place last Saturday morning, at around 1am on Grove Street, Mullingar.
The victim, a man in his 30s, was discovered with serious injuries.
He was taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar and later transferred to Beaumont hospital in Dublin where he remains in intensive care.
The teenager was released on bail subject to a number of conditions.
They include a €500 independent surety from the teen's mother, and that he surrender his passport and not apply for a duplicate.
He is also to abide by a curfew from 7pm to 6am and sign on at Mullingar Garda Station every Wednesday and Saturday.
The accused is not to interfere with witnesses and has been instructed to stay off all social media platforms.
He was remanded on bail to 6 February 2025, when he will reappear before Mullingar District Court.
