Two people have been arrested after the discovery of the body of a man in his 20s in Shelmalier Commons in Co Wexford.

The deceased man is 27-year-old Stephen Ring who was reported missing on 15 October.

The missing person appeal was stood down following the discovery of a body earlier today.

Gardaí have arrested a man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s following the discovery.

They are both detained at a garda station in Wexford.

The body of Stephen Ring was found in the water at Carrigfoyle Lake a popular recreational area not far from Wexford town.

Gardaí closed off the area following the discovery around midday and had to turn away a number of people looking to use the trails around the lake this afternoon.

Stephen Ring's remains have been removed to hospital in Waterford for a post mortem examination.

The post mortem is expected to take place at Waterford General Hospital tomorrow.

Stephen Ring, who was from just outside Wexford town, is said to have been very close to his grandparents and parents.

The two people who are detained, a man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s, are being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and they may be either charged or released tomorrow.

Members of the garda technical bureau have finished their work for today and uniformed members remain at the scene.

Stephen Ring's body was found around midday in water at the quarry which is in area called Shelmalier Commons, west of Wexford town.

It has been described as some distance away from where he was last seen in Wexford town in the early hours of 15 October.

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Wexford Garda Station.

A Garda Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to support the family of the deceased man.

Gardaí said investigations are ongoing.
