Two people have appeared in court charged in relation to a stabbing in Longford town which left a man seriously injured.

David Joyce, 28 and of Palace Crescent, Ardnacassa, Longford, appeared before Judge Bernadette Owens at Mullingar District Court.

He was charged with violent disorder and production of an article, namely a shovel and a red-handled screener.

Garda Yvonne Glacken gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution and during a bail application hearing she expressed concern that there could be further serious incidents similar to what occurred yesterday.

Garda Glacken told the court there are no DPP directions as of yet and the investigation is at an early stage, but she indicated that there may be further charges upon completion of the file.

Judge Bernadette Owens refused bail and remanded Mr Joyce in custody to appear before Longford District Court on October 15 by videolink.

Winnie Keenan, 28 and of the same address, was also charged with violent disorder on the same date, 10 October 2024, at Deanscurragh, Longford.

She was granted bail and is due to reappear on 17 December 17 at Longford District Court.

The court heard the victim was airlifted to the Mater hospital in Dublin following the incident where he underwent surgery.
