A new visitor attraction focusing on space education and exploration is being proposed for the midlands.
Plans have been submitted to Roscommon County Council for a National Space Exploration Centre (NSEC) in Monksland, Athlone, with funding sought through the EU Just Transition Grant Aid Scheme.
The applicant, Metaversal Ltd, is proposing a space themed educational and recreational facility in an existing warehouse that was formerly used for leisure use.
In the planning statement, the applicant outlines the NSEC would feature an immersive and interactive space museum, a virtual reality (VR) space mission and an event area with an adjoining cafe.
The proposed museum features up to 45 exhibitions communicating how important the planet is, and highlighting the positive and negative impact which human activity has on the planet.
In the planning document it explains how technologies and services which are facilitated through space exploration are displayed and explained in the museum.
It proposes a virtual reality roller coaster which will simulate a take-off, orbit of earth and landing back down to earth.
"The VR experience recreates a mission to space. The mission simulates each stage of the journey from pre-flight checks, docking at a space station and returning to earth. This is delivered through VR headsets and robotics that mimics a spaceship take-off and landing."
In its submission Metaversal Ltd documents how the centre aims to be "a visitor attraction of national prominence in the midlands" and "one that promotes engaging and entertaining learning experiences", attracting students from primary, secondary and third level institutions.
"It aims to promote learning in S.T.E.M. subjects and aims to create three full time and 19 part time jobs in the region.
"This will contribute to enhancing the local area as an attractive place within which to visit, live, learn and work."
A decision is due to be made on the proposed development by Roscommon County Council by 15 July.
