An investigation is under way into a suspected arson attack after a car struck a building, resulting in a fire at a tanning salon, in Carlow town in the early hours of this morning.

The incident occurred at around 2.30am when it is believed the car was reversed into the ground floor of the building, at the Barrack Street entrance side of the Fairgreen Shopping Centre.

A fire broke out and the driver of the car fled the scene.

This is the third tanning salon that has been burnt out in a similar way in the space of two years.

Fire crews from Carlow town and Bagenalstown stations brought the fire under control.

Gardaí say no injuries were reported and investigations are ongoing.

Two similar incidents at tanning salons on nearby Tullow Street in 2022 and last month are both still under investigation.

It is not yet known if the incidents are related but gardaí are continuing to investigate if there is a link between all three fires.

They have appealed for witnesses to the this morning's incident, or anyone who noticed anything unusual or who might have dashcam or other footage to contact Carlow Garda Station on 059-9136620.
