Divine intervention sought over wet weather in Wexford

Farmers in Wexford sought divine intervention in relation to constant wet weather, with mass said for better conditions in the locality last night.

Kilrush parish priest Fr Joseph Power said farmers have been affected "big time" by adverse weather conditions.

Last week, the Irish Farmers' Association's National Potato chairperson said there is a likelihood of potato shortages in supermarkets later in the year as less than 50 acres of the usual 21,000 acres have actually been planted so far, amid poor weather.

Fr Power, who said the mass at St Brigid's Church in Kilrush, said "everyone is in the same boat" in the area.

"Since last October, it's been raining and raining and raining," he said.

He added that a member of the public approached him to lead prayers over the wet weather situation.

He said that after the mass, the area had the "worst day" of rain the area has seen.

"Now today, it's a lovely day here, but we'll see what happens tomorrow," Fr Power said.

He added that the mass was well attended and brought in a crowd from different faiths.

"Please God, who knows, it will start a little campaign within one's conscience to say a prayer that the weather will improve."

Wexford will see dull and misty weather on Wednesday, with outbreaks of rain and drizzle as well as some hill and coastal fog, according to Met Éireann.

There will be some dry spells too, mainly in the east and southeast in the afternoon.
