A member of An Garda Síochána has been suspended from duty while the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) has issued an appeal for witnesses, following a fatal hit-and-run incident in Drogheda, Co Louth.

The crash happened before 2.30am on the Rathmullen Road, where a man in his 40s was found unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardaí said that the vehicle involved failed to remain at the scene but a vehicle of interest was later recovered and will undergo a technical and forensic examination.

An official garda car was not involved in the incident, nor was an on-duty member of the gardaí.

The scene was sealed off for a forensic examination and a post-mortem examination was due to be carried out.

GSOC said it is investigating after receiving a referral from gardaí about the matter.

It has appealed for information and is looking for any CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage.
