Frederick Thompson has appeared in court charged with threatening to kill and assault causing harm at Portlaoise Prison.
Thompson, with an address care of Midlands Prison, arrived at Portlaoise courthouse this morning.
Detective Garda Padraic Ryan from Portlaoise Garda Station said that when cautioned Thompson made no reply to the charge sheet.
When asked in court who was representing him, Thompson said he was representing himself.
The court was told that the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed three charges; two counts of threatening to kill under Section 5 of the Non-Fatal Offences Act, and one count of assault causing harm under Section 3 of the same act.
Detective Ryan made an application to remand Thompson in custody until 14 March for the Book of Evidence to be served.
Thompson requested "a two week remand if possible" instead.
Judge Andrew Cody granted the request for a two week remand saying he is in custody at present and gave him bail on his own bond of €100.
Thompson was remanded in custody to appear again for the Book of Evidence on Wednesday 28 February at 10.15am.
The court also heard that the accused is entitled to legal aid.
At the end of the hearing Thompson said: "There's a two week remand?"
The judge said "yes" and Thompson thanked him.
