A man in his 80s was hospitalised after an aggravated burglary at his home in Co Westmeath in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The man was assaulted and cash was taken during the burglary, which is believed to have occurred at around 1am at a house on Main Street in Kilbeggan.

He was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore, for treatment, but has since been discharged.

Gardaí carried out a technical examination at the scene and investigations are ongoing.

They are appealing for anyone with information, and in particular anyone who was in the Main Street area of Kilbeggan between midnight and 3am on Tuesday who saw anything which may have drawn their attention to contact them.

Any road users who may have video camera footage (including dash-cam) from the area at this time are also urged to make it available to gardaí.
