Community shocked after couple found dead in Longford house

People have expressed shock following the deaths of a couple at a house in Co Longford at the weekend.

Investigations are continuing after the bodies of the man and woman, both in their 60s, were discovered at the house in Killasonna, a rural area a few kilometres outside Granard, near the Longford-Westmeath and Cavan borders.

They have been named locally as Morag and Paul Kavanagh, and lived in the house for nearly 30 years.

The couple have two adult children.

The cause of their deaths is understood to be a suspected case of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Local councillor PJ Reilly urged people during the current cold spell who are using gas heating, to ensure they have carbon monoxide alarms installed, adding that carbon monoxide can be a silent killer.

Gardaí have said they are not treating the incident as criminal investigation and a file is being prepared for the Coroner's Court.
