A fisherman is missing and a second fisherman has been rescued from the sea off the Co Louth coast after a small fishing vessel was reported to be sinking this morning.

The coast guard said that a mayday call was received at 8.45am this morning from a vessel in difficulty, which had two people on board.

The Marine Rescue Coordination Centre is coordinating the search and rescue mission.

The coastguard helicopter R116, Clogherhead RNLI Lifeboat, Clogherhead Coast Guard Unit and Greenore Coast Guard unit were all tasked to the location, which is one nautical mile north of Dunany Point in Co Louth.

The rescued fisherman has been taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

A Divisional Controller of the Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre has said that the search is in the Dundalk Bay vicinity.

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Ivan Longmore said that the longer the search goes on, the more it will expand east and south with the tide.

He said the rescued fisherman was "conscious, but very cold".
