A teenage boy has died after what has been described as a "tragic accident" at his home in Co Wexford last week.

It is understood that the 14-year-old, named locally as Alex Saunders, was found unresponsive in a swimming pool in the back garden of his family home at Cromwellsfort in Wexford town on Thursday afternoon.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics after gardaí and other emergency services were called.

He was brought to Wexford General Hospital and then transferred to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin.

However, gardaí have confirmed that he passed away in hospital on Sunday.

Investigations into the death are ongoing.

Gardaí say that a file will be prepared for the Wexford coroner in relation to Alex's death.

Alex was a student at St Peter's College in Wexford town and is survived by his parents Patience and Paul.
