A woman has died after getting into difficulty while swimming off the Co Wexford coast.

The incident happened last night off Ballymoney beach in north Wexford when the woman, who was in her 60s, was swimming.

It is understood she got into difficulty at about 8pm and was brought from the water and treated at the scene, but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Her body was removed to University Hospital Waterford, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out.
