Two children from Co Laois who were forced to close their honesty box after it was targeted by thieves have started selling eggs again.

Eleven-year-old Liam and his 10-year-old sister Sophie Ellis made the decision to close their roadside honesty box after it was robbed for the fourth time last month.

Since their story went public, they have been inundated with messages of support and have now started selling eggs again from their honesty box, which is now located outside their local filling station in Durrow.

"Big thanks to Sandra and Oliver at Stanley Motors for offering to look after our Honesty Box. We would also like to thank Tom Delahunty for making us a new money box," the children posted on their Facebook account.

"We are so grateful for all the offers of support from our community and beyond," they said.

"They're thrilled to be back selling eggs again and delighted with all the support they've received. It's been a bit crazy, but the response has been very positive," said their mother, Catriona Ellis.

The children had raised €3,000 for the LauraLynn Children's Hospice and since the story went public the charity has received lots of donations.

On Tuesday, the siblings were invited to visit the hospice in Dublin where they were gifted two chicks to add to their flock.

"They've named the chicks Laura and Lynn and they chirped all the way home from Dublin," said Catriona.

The children set up their business during Covid and had been selling their eggs to neighbours and friends through the honesty boxed located close to their home between Durrow and Cullohill.

It proved a great success and the children decided to give money back to charity, choosing the LauraLynn hospice as their preferred charity.
