An equestrian training centre in Co Kilkenny is to get an upgrade following an announcement of Government investment today.

The €1.3 million in capital funding will allow the Grennan College Equestrian Centre in Thomastown replace existing prefabricated classrooms and supporting buildings.

Minister for Further and Education Simon Harris announced the funding, under the Further Education and Training Strategic Infrastructure Upgrade Fund, during a visit to the college today.

He said the investment will benefit "all who come through the gates and build on the centre's success as a key provider of education for the equine industry".

The upgrade will provide "fit for purpose" facilities for learners and staff, Minister Harris said.

"It will allow our education leaders develop new models of delivery and a regional service of excellence in horsemanship and equine skills."

The project, which is being developed through SOLAS and the Kilkenny and Carlow Education and Training Board, now progresses to the design stage.

SOLAS Chief Executive Andrew Brownlee said those who use the centre deserve "cutting edge" facilities and equipment.

"The continued investments in capital infrastructure being made, including today in Kilkenny, are very welcome steps that will mean our FET facilities reflect the modern, dynamic nature of FET provision in 2022."

Martha Bolger, the director of further education and training with Kilkenny and Carlow ETB, said the funding will "transform" the learning experience for students.

"We are ambitious in our plans for Grennan Equestrian Centre and this funding will help towards enabling those ambitions."
