Two women have been critically injured in a road crash in Co Louth.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a car hit a tree on the N53 in Rassan, Dundalk, at 8.30pm last night.

The male driver and front seat passenger, both aged in their late teens, were uninjured.

Two women, aged 21 and 23 and who were in the back of the car, were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where they are said to be in a critical condition.

The N53 road is closed at Rassan for a forensic examination and diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing to any witnesses, particularly anyone who was travelling on the N53 last night between 8pm and 9pm and who may have camera (including dash cam) footage, to contact Dundalk Garda Station on 042 9388400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
