A 72-year-old man is in a serious condition after he was attacked during a robbery at his home in Co Kildare last night.

The man disturbed a group of men who had broken into a shed at the back of his home in Ardrass Lower, outside Celbridge at around 9.30pm.

He sustained a number of injuries, including head injuries, and was taken to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown in Dublin, where his condition is described as serious but stable.

A number of people left the scene on foot, while one left on a scrambler motorbike, which was taken during the robbery.

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the incident and is being held at Leixlip Garda Station.

Gardaí say they are still searching for a number of other young men, who they believe were also involved.

They have appealed to anyone who was in the Ardrass Lower area last night and may have seen anything suspicious to contact Leixlip Garda Station on 01-666 7800, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111, or any garda station.

It is the second such attack on a man in his 70s in his home in the last three weeks.

Tom Niland from Skreen in Co Sligo remains in a critical condition in hospital after he was attacked and robbed by masked raiders at his home on Tuesday 18 January.
