A boil water notice has been issued for people supplied by the Wexford Town Public Water Supply.

It follows water supply issues in the southeastern town yesterday.

Irish Water and Wexford County Council say the measure, which comes into effect immediately, is due to concerns at the "elevated levels of turbidity in the supply which has impacted the treatment process".

The notice affects all areas supplied by Wexford Town Public Water Supply, including Newtown, Barntown, Taghmon, Ballindinas, Shelmalier, Colestown, Coolcots, Carriglawn, Clonard, Townparks, Park, Mulgannon, Maudlintown, town centre and surrounding areas.

In a statement, Irish Water and the local authority said crews were unable to resolve the issues at the treatment plant yesterday and overnight and are working to rectify the issue as soon as possible.

Pat Duggan from Irish Water said they appreciate the impact the notice will have on residents and businesses in the town, but added that "public health is Irish Water's number one priority".

It is the latest in a series of boil water notices issued in Co Wexford recently.

Earlier this week a boil water notice was issued to residents in Gorey, Co Wexford.

Irish Water says that notice was due to issues at the Creagh Water Treatment Plant, following heavy rains.

Last month, a boil water notice affecting up to 26,000 people was imposed in Wexford town.

The notice was issued by Irish Water and Wexford County Council because of issues with disinfection in the supply.
