Householders and businesses in the Wexford town area have been told to boil their water before use, following a deterioration in the local water supply.

The notice has been issued by Irish Water following consultations with the Health Service Executive and Wexford County Council and affects over 21,700 customers in the town and surrounding districts.

According to Irish Water, the notice is "as a precaution" because of "a deterioration in the quality of raw water entering supply".

The areas affected include Newtown Road, Carcur, Carricklawn, Coolcotts, Whitemill, Wyram, Clonard, Town Parks, Ard Carman, Hill Street, Barntown and Taghmon.

Irish Water's operations lead for Wexford, Brian O’Leary, said the company acknowledged "the impact and inconvenience" caused by the boil water notice.

"We are working with our partners in Wexford County Council, in consultation with the HSE, to address this issue and lift this notice as soon as it is safe to do so," he said in a statement.

"Our priority is the provision of safe, clean drinking water and safeguarding that water supply for the future is a vital focus".

While the notice is in effect, water must be boiled for drinking; making drinks with water; preparing salads and other foods which will not be cooked; brushing teeth; and making ice.

Queries should be directed to Irish Water’s customer care helpline on 1850 278 278 and updates will be posted on its website.
