Prohibition notices have been placed on three popular beaches in Co Wexford because of breaches of e-coli levels.
The beaches affected are at Ballymoney north, which is a blue flag beach; Booley Bay, which is a green coast beach; and Duncannon.
'Do not swim' notices have been put in place at the areas involved, following routine testing as part of Wexford County Council’s bathing water sampling programme.
Samples taken showed breaches of the mandatory levels for e-coli and intestinal enterococci.
The council said in a statement that the contamination may be "partly attributable" to recent spells of heavy rain.
Further samples have been taken at the beaches involved and results are expected on Saturday.
Red flags and signage indicating swimming is prohibited have been placed at the three beaches in the meantime.
The council said that the water quality results for 15 other beaches sampled along the Wexford coastline have been "excellent", with no issues encountered.
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council in south Dublin said earlier today that a temporary swimming ban is in place at Seapoint Beach until 25 August.
It said water quality results indicate an increase in the levels of bacteria found in bathing water.
