An investigation is under way in Co Wicklow after a lamb was killed and cut up in the field in which it was grazing.

The incident occurred on a remote farm close to Newcastle last night.

It is the second time such an incident has happened in the area in the last few weeks.

The skin and head of the sheep was all that was left behind by the culprits.

Farm owner Debbie Johnston said they check their farm each night as poaching is "an ongoing issue".

"We don't know who we are going to meet and that is a concern," she said.

Gardaí have appealed for members of the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity at night.

People with information are asked to contact gardaí in Newtownmountkennedy.

Gardaí have advised that the animal had recently been treated with medication and as a result the meat is unsuitable for human consumption.

They say CCTV has been installed in the area affected to try to deter the culprits.

The public has been advised to only purchase lamb from trusted sources.
