A 21-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after a serious assault in Navan, Co Meath, in the early hours of this morning.

Gardaí say they were alerted to the man who was lying on the ground on Watergate Street at around 3am.

He was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, and has since been transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

He remains in a critical condition.

The scene has been preserved and a garda technical examination has taken place.

Gardaí say they are following a definite line of enquiry in relation to investigation.

Residents and business owners on Watergate Street say they were not aware of an incident on the street early this morning.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. There have been no arrests made in connection with the case.

Some business owners say they only became aware of it when gardaí called into them later in the day or after seeing news reports.

Gardaí have issued an appeal for anyone who may have been in the Watergate Street area between 2.45am and 3.30am today who may have witnessed the assault or any motorists with dashcam footage to contact Navan Garda Station on 046-9036100, the Garda Confidential Line 18000 666 111 or any garda station.
