A 93-year-old man is in a serious condition in hospital after being stabbed at his home in Co Louth.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses after the serious assault at Sandy Lane in Blackrock at about 2.50pm this afternoon.

The man sustained a number of apparent stab wounds following an altercation with another man, gardaí said.

The elderly man has been taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

A technical and forensic examination of the scene is under way.

Gardaí appealed for witnesses, in particular anyone who was in the area of Sandy Lane or the nearby Community Centre between 2pm and 3pm.
