A man has died after he was hit by a car in Monasterevin, Co Kildare.

The pedestrian, who was in his 40s, was seriously injured when he was struck by a 4x4 vehicle on Dublin Road shortly before 7pm.

He was treated at the scene by emergency services personnel but died a short time later.

The driver of the 4x4 was uninjured.

His body was removed to Naas General Hospital where a post-mortem will be carried out.

The man's death bring to three the number of people killed on the roads today.

In Galway, a woman in her 80s died after the car she was travelling in collided with another vehicle this morning.

A woman in her 30s was killed in Dublin when the car she was driving was in collision with a number of other vehicles on the slip road at Junction 5 on the M50.
