The army bomb squad was called in the early hours of this morning to deal with an improvised explosive device in a vehicle in Navan, Co Meath.
Gardaí called the Army Bomb Disposal Team to remove the device, which was inside a vehicle in Brews Hill, Navan.
The army team arrived at the scene at 3.20am, after which time a cordon was put in place to ensure public safety.
Nearby houses were evacuated for the duration of the operation.
A "viable IED" was discovered in the vehicle, made safe, and removed for further investigation by technicians.
The scene was declared safe at 8.25am.
The Defence Forces warned the public to maintain a safe distance and call gardaí if they come across any "munition components" or suspect devices.
