More than 100 motorists caught speeding on M7 after GoSafe vans deployed

More than 100 motorists have been caught speeding by Gardaí and GoSafe vans on the M7 between junctions 8 and 11 today.

The speed limit was reduced to 60km/h in January as works to widen the road got under way.

Two GoSafe vans were deployed along the route today in an effort to encourage motorists to slow down.

However, a senior local garda has denied that the deployment if for revenue generation, or "shooting fish in a barrel."

Speaking on RTÉ's Drivetime, Superintendent Declan McCarthy said "there is no intention to try and impose penalty points or fines."

"A win for us is if nobody is caught," he said.

"Unfortunately today, despite an extensive publicity campaign both on national and local media and on our own social media platforms we have in excess of 100 people who today decide to put the lives of those workers, themselves and their fellow commuters at risk."

Since the roadworks began more than 500 fixed penalty notices have been issued to drivers for speeding and 32 motorists have been prosecuted.

Gardaí are again appealing to motorists to reduce their speed and obey the temporary limit between both junctions.

Supt McCarthy added that gardaí have had regulator meetings with the contractors and Kildare County Council, who are overseeing the project.

He said they anticipate the works will be completed before the end of March.

Supt McCarthy also said that because of the narrowness of the works it makes it very difficult to deploy emergency services to the area and leads to other situations with rubberneckers.

"One collision on one side of the carriageway almost inevitably leads to another on the opposite carriageway," he said.
