An electronics manufacturer in Co Offaly is planning to cut 65 jobs.

Sennheiser has announced that it is outsourcing the jobs from its plant in the Srah Industrial Estate in Tullamore.

Fine Gael Councillor Tommy McKeigue described the planned jobs losses as a "dark day" for the town and said he understood that the jobs were being moved to Romania.

Sennheiser employs more than 100 people in Tullamore and has operated there since 1990.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Tony McCormack said the company had invested heavily in the plant in recent years and said the job losses, while not as bad as initially thought, come as a "huge shock" for those affected.

Redundancies are expected to take place on a phased basis beginning in the autumn.
