Residents of two houses in Drogheda, Co Louth have returned to their homes after being evacuated due to a gas leak.

It is understood that workmen damaged a gas main in the Beamore Road area of the town just after six o'clock this evening.

Emergency services were called to the scene.

Gardaí say there are no reports of injuries.

Gas Networks Ireland said it was requested to attend the scene in response to a report of third party damage to a gas main.

A spokesperson said that workers had checked homes and were satisfied there are no safety issues.
